I created this indoor go kart track for an upcoming kart game made in Unity. Time was tight with no concepts to work with, so it was up to me to conceptualise and create quickly. This meant the overall track layout would likely evolve during development - so I decided to create a modular track kit to allow for quick changes and easy construction of multiple track layouts if required. To accompany the track, I created a kit of internal modular building components, matching the same grid size as the track kit. Plus additional props/set dress elements like a podium, banners, trophies aswell as decals to add extra details i.e skid marks. I also designed/created the external of the kart building, shown in the hub area of the game.
The final game will be playable not only on pc but eventually mobile devices - so had to be highly optimised. With this in mind I incorporated 1 trim sheet used by all track pieces plus individual/separate detail maps (on UV2) for road markings that correlate with each track piece. There’s also 1 trim sheet for the internal modular building pieces plus a trim sheet for the external building. I channel packed all maps for extra optimization, with the final result being brought into Unity (URP).
In addition, I animated a short track fly round which was used in a teaser for the upcoming game. I also helped the lead dev rig the new kart models to the AI system which drives the NPC karts.
Created in 3DS Max, Substance Painter, Photoshop, ZBrush and Unity
